As most of you are aware, the US Army Corps announced on Sunday afternoon that they would suspend construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline to conduct an environmental impact study and explore alternative routes. Victory chants are being spread, and that's valid and well deserved. This was undoubtedly a massive step towards the total prevention of a looming and terrifying threat towards both the environment and Native lives. It proved how influential a united group can be: that it isn't useless to call federal offices and local representatives, or attend protests, or ceaselessly spread awareness. It proves people have power, which should ring as a call to arms to those reluctant to fight, and an affirmation for those who have started. But now the already relatively quiet mainstream media is not circulating that a suspension does not inherently imply a permanent halt. The companies behind the proposed construction released a statement via Buisnesswire that reads as follows:
[We] are fully committed to ensuring that this vital project is brought to completion and fully expect to complete construction of the pipeline without any additional rerouting in and around Lake Oahe. Nothing this Administration has done today changes that in any way.
Therefore, it is necessary to continue to keep the fight going and stand with the water protectors. A police roadblock on a North Dakotoan highway is delaying the timely evacuation of patients and vulnerable populations, and the second blizzard has just hit the water protectors, as Linda Black Elk describes:
